Ella Hval (1904-1994) was a famous actress, born in Stavanger, who grew up with her working-class family in Kristiania (Oslo). She was active in the amateur theater of the labor movement, where she met her husband, the poet Rudolf Nilsen. Her debut as a professional actress took place at the Chat Noir theater in 1932. She worked for the National Theater in Oslo 1934-35 and 1940-1974. She was president of the Actors' Union 1951-1967. Awarded the Order of St. Olav 1973.
