Summary

Description
English: Encombe House A Grade II* Listed country house, it has its origins in the C17, but was somewhat remodelled and enlarged for its then owner John Pitt, between 1740 and 1770. It remained with the Pitt family (distant relations of William Pitt the younger and elder) until its sale to Lord Eldon in 1806. He had started out as plain John Scott, the younger son of a coal trader from Newcastle who became very successful. The house remained in the Scott family until comparatively recently, when in 2002 it was sold to merchant banker Charles McVeigh for £16 million, a sum that included the estate of some 2000 acres.
