Summary

Description
English: Conceptions of the Earth's place in the universe differed sharply from Thales to Anaximander, both philosophers in Miletus. Thales supposed that a cylindrical Earth floated in the water of the great ocean that gave birth to all that is. Anaximander similarly supposed that a cylindrical Earth floated, but that since it was at the centre of the universe, everything would fall towards it, and it would not move, so it did not require an ocean to float in.
