Summary
Description Hotel butty negotiating Shirley Drawbridge near Solihull - geograph.org.uk - 1724211.jpg |
English:
Hotel butty negotiating Shirley Drawbridge near Solihull. This is Bridge No 8 on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal, just in Worcestershire between Shirley and Hollywood. The channel through when the bridge has been raised (electrically by boat crews using a BWB key) is narrow and a line of piles helps guide boats through safely or it could be tricky in a strong wind.
A butty is an unpowered narrowboat, usually hauled by a motorised companion vessel, or even a horse. The Drawbridge public house is adjacent to the drawbridge! Gongoozlers abound, though there's seldom much to excite the experienced practitioner! ;-) In this image, the (unpowered) hotel boat butty "Karna Taka" with its typical large tiller and rudder is being pulled by the powered sister boat "Rose". An optical illusion makes Rose appear to be in lower water than the butty. See also: 1717406 |
