The Division of Corrections was created under the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions in 1957. In 1969, the Division of Corrections became part of the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. The Correctional Organization Act of 1975 later created the Department of Offender Rehabilitation through the transfer of the Division of Corrections from the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and responsibility for field supervision from the Parole and Probation Commission. In July 1978 the name changed from Department of Offender Rehabilitation to Department of Corrections.
