L'organisation du décor - compartimentage du marli - imite des porcelaines de Chine au XVIe siècle, connues sous le nom de "kraak porselein" après que la cargaison d'une caraque portugaise eut été saisie et vendue en Hollande en 1602. Ces pièces furent imitées en Iran et, la Chine ayant fermé ses ports au commerce extérieur pendant un certain temps, exportées dans le monde occidental au XVIIe siècle.
