The attack on Rhode Island, December 8th, 1776. On 8 December 1776 a British Squadron under command of Commodore Sir Peter Parker consisting of HMS CHATHAM, Captain Andrew Snape Douglas; PRESTON Captain William Hotham; CENTURION, Captain Thomas Fitzherbert; RENOWN, Captain George Dawson; and EXPERIMENT, Captain Sir James Wallace and eight smaller vessels, convoying two brigades of British and two brigades of Hessian troops, in all 7,000 men, under General Clinton, made an attack on Rhode Island See also NHHC Photograph Collection.
