Summary
Description Junkers Ju87G-2 ‘494083 - RI+JK’ (33003385142).jpg |
The RAF Museum has chosen to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the service by dismantling and closing the museum dedicated to its finest hour, the Battle of Britain Museum. Ever cloud has a silver lining, however, and during May 2016 the aircraft were in a part dismantled state, allowing for some interesting photos. Built as a Ju87D-5 (WkNr2883) and later converted to a G-2 and given the new WkNr494083. Captured in Germany in May 1945, it was brought to the UK for museum use. It immediately went in to store and only made a few brief static appearances. It was at RAF Henlow in 1967 for the filming of the ‘Battle of Britain’ film and permission was given to restore the aircraft to fly. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately??) this didn’t happen due to the aircraft’s overall condition. It was certainly engine run and probably taxied, but never appeared in the film. After several more show appearances, it was repainted to original markings at RAF St Athan in 1975 and in 1978 it arrived at Hendon for permanent display in the Battle of Britain Hall, RAF Museum, Hendon, London, UK. 28th May 2016 |
