Summary
Description Keynsham Church (St. John).jpg |
English:
Keynsham Church (St. John), 5 April 2015. The church was built in 1292 by the Augustinian monks of the neighbouring Keynsham Abbey so that the townspeople need not use the Abbey Church (no longer existing today). After the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539, St. John's fell into decay and in 1632 the tower (unusually adjacent to the chancel) collapsed. In 1655 the church was restored and a new tower in Decorated style was built in a more conventional position at the west end. The church again fell into disrepair by the mid 19th Century so it was once more restored in 1861-63 to its mediaeval appearance.
