Summary
Description Kings Park Hike & Bike Trail from NY 25A.jpg |
English:
Roadside view along eastbound
New York State Route 25A
at the Kings Park Hike and Bike Trail leading into
Nissequogue River State Park
in
Kings Park, New York
. The rail trail was originally a spur from the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Railroad leading into
Kings Park State Psychiatric Center
, which provided coal, fuel oil, food, and often inmates. It began west of the Kings Park LIRR station, ran along the north side of the station house, crossed Indian Hill Road (Suffolk CR 14), then curved northeast at this side where it crossed NY 25A before heading towards the former hospital. The hospital was closed by the state in 1996, but tracks were abandoned sometime before 1984, and some freight cars were left behind at the time.
