Title |
Late early-medieval cloisonné enamelled disc brooch
|
||
Description |
English:
An incomplete late early-medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) - medieval copper-alloy cloisonné
enamelled
disc brooch (late 10th - 11th century), of the
Saunderton type (Weetch Type 20.A)
. The brooch is constructed from a base-plate of copper alloy with six equidistant rounded projections; a circular copper-alloy collar has been soldered onto this base plate and set within the collar is the cloisonné enamel pattern. The pattern is marked out by copper alloy cells and comprises a six-petalled flower against a dark blue enamelled background. The petals of the flower are infilled with light blue enamel in two opposing cells, separated by enamel which is now blue-green. In the centre there is a circular cell infilled with white enamel. On each of the projecting lobes a small collar of copper strip was soldered; two of the six have been broken off. Each strip would have secured a glass pellet; the four that remain are dark blue. On the reverse of the base-plate are the remains of the location of twin lugs which would have secured the pin. The catch-plate survives, while the pin lug and pin are no longer present. There are patches of gilding remaining on the reverse and on the collar.
Buckton (1986, 8) catalogues fifteen of these brooches, they are very similar in form and decoration. Dimensions: thickness: 4.99 mm; diameter: 25.16 mm |
