Following Koepplin and Falk state between the second and third state of the engraving, in which the profile head in the upper left corner, completely removed in the third state, is still partly visible with diagonal lines hatched across it. Only three impressions from the first two states have survived, while there are about thirty known examples of the final state, which was printed in a large edition not long after the deaths of Luther and Cranach.
