bulb. The inner quartz tube has mercury and argon gas inside it, and produces light by an electric arc through the mercury vapor. The small cylinder below the inner tube is a resistor to provide a small current to an electrode that creates a small starting arc to start the main arc. The outer bulb has an optical filter material that blocks the dangerous short-wavelength (UV-C)
ultraviolet light
the arc produces.
