Summary
Description Magnetic dipole force MHD and kinematic models.jpg |
English:
The figure shows MHD and kinematic models for force generated in the solar wind by a magnetic dipole versus characteristic length
L
, the green line showing the value of ion gyroradius
r
g
≈ 72 km and the black line showing force
F
MHD
from the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. Kinematic models apply for
L < r
g
. A coefficient of drag numerical model from Fujita04 shows the reduced force and percentage thrust lost in the solid and dashed blue lines, respectively. Results from Ashida14 show similar reduced force and percentage thrust lost in the solid and dashed red lines, respectively. Additional simulation results from Hajiwara15 are shown for the MHD and kinematic model as single data points. All models are in close agreement. The results show that choice of a magnetic sail radius
L
much less than the ion gyroradius
r
g
would result in significant lost thrust as compared with the MHD model.
