Description
English: Portrait of Maria Anna of Savoy (1757-1824), wife of Benedetto, Prince of Savoy (1741-1808).
Italiano: "L'identificazione della modella si appoggia non solo sulle iscrizioni antiche presenti sul retro dell'opera, ma anche sul confronto con un ritratto di Maria Anna di Chiablese (1757-1827), conservato nel Castello di Racconigi. Quest'ultimo dipinto, pubblicato da Noemi Gabrielli, sembra peraltro appartenere alla stessa mano, nonostante alcune varianti iconografiche e una superore qualità della versione oggi a Palazzo Reale. L'opera potrebbe essere stata eseguita in occasione delle nozze della donna, celebrate nel 1775: questa ipotesi, non contraddetta né dai dati della moda, né dall'età dell'effigiata, può trovare una conferma nell'esibita presenza del cane, simbolo, quant'altri mai, di fedeltà coniugale. Un'altra replica del ritratto di Palazzo Reale - di dimensioni analoghe (116 x 91 cm.) ma di forma ovale e con alcune varianti nello sfondo - è conservata a Roma presso il Quirinale, dove è giunta da Torino, il 18 aprile 1888."
