After the Moran Bros. shipbuilding plant burned down in the Seattle Fire of 1889, the company rebounded by securing large government contracts. It built the Navy torpedo boat "Rowan," the Coast Guard boat "Golden Gate," and the U.S.S. Nebraska battleship. Robert Moran served as mayor of Seattle from 1888 to 1890.
