Summary
Description NOLA French medium cannon.jpg |
English:
Photo shows a French cannon at the Chalmette National Battlefield in New Orleans, Louisiana. The piece is located at Battery 6 in the American defensive line. The breech inscription is "Arsenal de Paris" making the manufacture unquestionably French. The park ranger wrote in an email that it was a 9-pounder, but French field pieces were manufactured in 4-, 8- and 12-pound types. Both British 9-pounders and French 8-pounders have a ball of 4 inches (100 mm) diameter, making them essentially equivalent. Probably a French 8-pounder, but will request change to "NOLA French medium cannon.JPG" to play safe.
