This picture lays out one way Neutral Beam Injection can be done. This is laid out in a four step process. (1) First, plasma is formed by microwaving (also known as RF heating) gas. (2) Next, the plasma is accelerated across a voltage drop. As ions fall down the voltage drop they are heated, while the electric field does work, physical work, on the ions heating them to fusion conditions. (3) After this the ions are re-neutralized using electrons. (4) Finally the neutral hot material is injected into the machine.
