Old George Watson's Ladies College, 7 George Square Melville House, built in 1871 on the site of Admiral Duncan's house, was the home of George Watson's Ladies College until sold to Edinburgh University in 1974. The site of the Boys' College had been sold in the 19thC to accommodate the new Royal Infirmary in Lauriston Place and a new College built on the playing fields of Merchiston Castle School in Colinton Road. With the sale of their building the girls joined the boys, turning the Colinton Road building into a co-educational school.
