Description

Bookplate c.1680-1690 with arms of Samuel Pepys: Quarterly 1st & 4th: Sable, on a bend or between two nag's heads erased argent three fleurs-de-lis of the field (Pepys [1] ); 2nd & 3rd: Gules, a lion rampant within a bordure engrailed or (Talbot [2] ). Samuel Pepys the diarist was the son of John Pepys of Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, and descended from the John Pepys who married Elizabeth Talbot, the heiress of Cottenham. [1] Inscription: "Samuel Pepys of Brampton in Huntingtonshire Esq., Secretary of the Admiralty to His Ma.ty King Charles the Second. Descended of ye antient family of Pepys of Cottenham in Cambrideshire". Engraved by by the engraver of Blome's Guillim (British Bookplates, p.28). Ref Franks [F23258]. From the collection of James W.
