Description: Polar Exploration (image 49)
These digitised images are from a photograph album from the Lissadell Papers (Ref: D4131) titled Eira , bearing the inscription, From B. Leigh Smith to Sir Henry Gore-Booth in grateful remembrance of assistance afforded to the crew of the Eira in the Polar Seas . This album contains photographs of the Kara, the Eira , their crews and the Polar Sea.
Benjamin Leigh Smith (1838-1913) was a British yachtsman and explorer. He brought back specimens for the British Museum and Royal Botanic Gardens, as well as live polar bears for the London Zoo. By his fourth expedition, Leigh Smith's enthusiasm for Arctic exploration had advanced to the point that he had his own vessel – Eira – specially built.
Sir Henry Gore-Booth (1843-1900) was involved in the rescue of fellow Arctic explorer, Benjamin Leigh Smith in 1882. Sir Henry was also a prolific writer on a variety of topics including Arctic exploration, yachting, whaling, polar bear hunting and shark fishing. He sailed his own yacht to the Arctic.
