Portrait of Johann Tetzel (1465–1519) taking an oath. At the top left of the image is Pope Leo X (1475-1521), at the top right is the Pope Leo X’s papal bull Cum postquam ("When after") issued November 9, 1518, which defined the doctrine of indulgences and addressed the issue of the church to absolve the faithful from temporal punishment. At the lower left is an indulgence box for holding coins and at the lower right is an indulgence.
