Photograph showing closeup of hydropneumatic recuperator extension above the barrel of British QF 18 pounder Mk II field gun , WWI vintage, at the Imperial War Museum, London.
This gun served on the Western front between September 1916 and November 1917, was sent back to Britain to have its barrel relined after firing 16,153 rounds, and was sent back to France in March 1918 and served until the end of the war.
