Summary
Description Race Riot at New London Naval Base 1919.jpg |
Race Riot at New London Naval Base New London, Conn. May 30. Between 15 and 20 sailors and soldiers connected with the New London police naval base were arrested by police, marines and firemen, late yesterday and turned over to the naval authorities, following rioting, according to the police. The trouble began when negro sailors entered the coast guard academy and attacked white sailors. The fighting spread to the streets and a riot call was sounded. There has been evidence of ill-feeling between white and negro sailors here for several weeks. |
