Summary

Description
English: Railway bridge over River Calder, above Ledgard Bridge, Mirfield (SE201195) This steel bridge was added to the original stone bridge of 1840 (hidden behind, apart from the piers) when two more tracks were added through Mirfield. The waste area on the right is submerged when the river is in flood. The graffiti artists have been at work here. The masonry at the bottom left is a remnant of the mill tail race from Butt End Mill, owned by James Walker and Sons, blanket weavers. The mill had two water turbines. The water was fed into the race on the top side of the weir close to where the two-foot bridge supports protrude from the river. It went through a filter and then down under the mill to feed the turbines. The mill also had a steam engine called "Edith Mary". (Information from Gordon Kneale Brooke)
