Summary

Description

Just beyond Akaroa township is the classic lighthouse seen in any story book.

A howling southerly blows, conditions that once demanded a lighthouse to guide seafarers safely through a harbour entrance.

It is just a breeze compared with weathers encountered when the lighthouse stood on its original position, Akaroa's harbour heads. During its construction the framework was blown over. Starting over, heavy ballast was loaded into each timber wall. Materials arrived by sea and were hauled up a cliff-edge gantry.
