Summary

Description Tightly coiled Super Typhoon Chaba sweeps past the Northern Mariana Islands in this true-color image, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 23, 2004, at 3:50 UTC. About 8 hours before this image was taken, Chaba struck the Northern Mariana Islands. The powerful storm brought sustained winds of 287 km/hr (178 mph) and a storm surge of approximately 5.5 meters (18 feet) to the islands. The storm caused widespread damage including heavy flooding, uprooted trees and downed power lines.
