Saucer brooch

Description |
English:
An Early Medieval gilded, copper alloy saucer brooch, with an incised pattern. The central design includes two lines making a plain cross enclosed in two circles, a border of oblique and horizontal lines enclosed in two more circles. The upturned edges of the brooch are slightly damaged. Parts of the pin fitting and catch plate survive on the undecorated back of the brooch. A brooch with a similar design was found with an inhumation in a late 5th - early 7th C cemetery, at Castle Hill, Wheatley, Oxon in the 1880s (Macgregor and Bolick 1993 p 49, no 2.34)
