The identity of the sitter is not known. Dietrich Rauchenberger has suggested that the painting may depict
Leo Africanus
(c.1494-c.1554).(Rauchenberger 1999, pp. 78-79) Another possibility is that painting depicts the Italian poet
Marcantonio Flaminio
(1497/8–1550) who was a friend of the artist.(Masonen 2001, p. 128)
