Summary
| Description |
Sir John D'Aubernoun died in 1277. This, life sized, brass is the oldest surviving memorial brass in the country. I did the rubbing at the little church of St Mary, Stoke D'Abernon, Surrey on Tuesday 30th October 1973, and paid £2 for the privilege. He has hung on the stairs for the last 36 years, and apart from losing one elbow has worn very well indeed. I have just re-painted and gilded his shield and he looks nearly good as new. The shield is of precious blue enamel from 1277, and I was particularly instructed not to rub on it. I was most careful not to! |
