Summary

Description
English: The details, colors, and textures of the House Chamber create a richly patterned scene for Paul Ryan’s Speaker portrait. Ryan poses ceremoniously holding a gavel, standing in front of the high-backed Speaker’s chair on the top tier of the Speaker’s rostrum. The flag, which hangs vertically behind the rostrum, defines the background space in the upper left. To the right of the figure, the strong contrast in the veining of the black Italian marble column and the edge of the bronze-relief fasces wrapped in a laurel swag add architectural information about the House Chamber and a complex decorative background to the composition.
