St Pantalus was the legendary first bishop of Basel. According to tradition, he was martyred with
St Ursula
and her followers at Cologne. He holds a palm frond, symbolising his martyrdom (Müller, 228). Holbein later incorporated St Pantalus in
a design for the organ shutters of Basel Cathedral
