FIRST GATED COMMUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES STARTING AROUND BY PIERRE LORILLARD IV AS A HUNTING CLUB. THE AREA ATTRCTED MANY NOTABLES. MANY OF THE COTTAGES WERE BUILT BY WELL KNOWN ARCHITECT BRUCE PRICE. AT ONE OF THE ANNUAL BALLS THE WORD TUXEDO WAS COINED FOR A TYPE OF FORMAL ATTIRE. THE WORD TUXEDO ITSELF IS A NATIVE AMERICAN WORD MEANING “CROOKED WATER” OR “CROOKED RIVER”. THE PICTURE SHOWS ST. MARY'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH WHICH IS DEFINITELY BEHIND THE GREAT STONE GATES

IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET INTO THIS COMMUNITY. I TRIED TO TALK MY WAY IN FOR 15 MINUTES WITH NO SUCCESS. THE PICTURE OF THE CHURCH I HAVE SENT IS DEFINITELY WITHIN THE DISTRICT AND YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE GREAT GATES TO REACH IT. SINCE I CANNOT ACCESS THE INVENTORY I CAN'T BE 100% POSITIVE IT IS A CONTRIBUTING STRUCTURE BUT CHANCE IS VERY GOOD THAT IT IS.
