Description The Clocktower of Andronicus Cyrrhestes (Tower of the Winds) at night on May 19, 2021.jpg |
English:
The Clocktower of Andronicus Cyrrhestes better knows as the Tower of the Winds is located in the Roman Agora of Athens. It was allegedly built by the astronomer Andronicus of Cyrrhus in the 1st century B.C. It functioned as a water clock, a sundial, and a weather vane. On its frieze are depicted the figures of eight wind gods. The three depicted here are (from left to right): Kaikias (NE wind), Boreas (N wind), and Skiron (NW wind).
