I took a cup of coffee.In a little while very sick and vomiting. He wassick the first time two or three days. Complainedof stomach, headache, and bone-ache. After he gotbetter I go see him every day—every night. After awhile something the matter with head. Did notknow anything. Perhaps crazy. I tried to speakhim. He did not know me. I wish to stay with him.Captain Hall called me to stay with him. After hegot better, I asked him what made him sick. Hesays, ^ I dont know. Everybody went to breakfast.I staid with him. A man came down intothe cabin, and he said nothing to me more. Afterthat Hannah talked to him. Every morning I wasabsent seal-hunting. I overheard Captain Budding-ton talk about Captain Hall. I wanted to hear.Captain Buddington said he was sick again. Didnot know me. Once in a while he called, ^ Halloo,Joe ! Then did not know me. Two nights he wasvery sick. Died two nights and one day after. It takes two days to dig a grave with picks andice-chisels and axes in the flint-like ground, and onthe third day after his death, the crew, dressed intheir Arctic clothing and with lanterns in their hands,bear to his long rest the remains of their loved andhonored commander.
