Summary

Description
English: The motion of a vibrating violin string, an SVG depiction of Fig. 63, p. 387 of Hermann von Helmhotlz On the Sensation of Tone (4th edition published in German in 1877), https://archive.org/details/onsensationston02helmgoog/page/n409/mode/2up

The text accompanying the diagram (translation by Alexander Ellis (1895)) reads:

" Hence the motion of the string may be briefly thus described. In fig. 63 the foot d of the ordinate of its highest point moves backwards and forwards with a constant velocity on the horizontal line ab, while the highest point of the string describes in succession the two parabolic arcs ac 1 b and bc 2 a, and the string itself is always stretched in the two lines ac 1 and bc 1 or ac 1 and bc 2 .
