Summary

Description Fragment of an original Japanese Type 97 "Purple" cipher machine on display at the United States National Security Agency's National Cryptologic Museum located in Ft. Meade, Maryland. The plaque at the base of the machine fragment reads: " 'Purple' This is the largest of three surviving pieces of the famous Japanese diplomatic cipher machine. It was recovered from the wreckage of the Japanese embassy in Berlin, 1945."
