Naval Station Great Lakes Ill. (Feb. 28th, 2002) – Mr. Gerald Wilson, guest conductor of the Great Lakes Jazz Ensemble, helped conduct a special concert, “Great Lakes Experience.” Wilson, one of the first black Navy musicians and composer at Great Lakes during WWII, and played with Legendary Trumpeter Mr. Clark Terry between 1941 and 1945. Terry was also a guest player during the special concert. Approximately 20 other former African American Navy musicians, and Great Lakes alumni were recognized for their dedicated service during the concert.
