SENATOR CHARLES W. TOBEY(R) NEW HAMPSHIRE DIED EARLY (SATURDAY) OF A HEART ATTACK AT THE NAVAL HOSPITAL IN NEARBY BETHESDA,MD.THE 74-YEAR-OLD SENATOR, A FORMER GOVERNOR OF NEW HAMPSHIRE,DIED WITH HIS WIFE, THE FORMER LILLIAN S.CROMPTON AT HIS SIDE,DEATH CAME TO THE BIBLE-QUOTING ,FUN-LOVING SENATOR SIX-AND-A-HALF HOURS AFTER BEING ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL. TOBEY WAS HEAD OF THE SENATE INTERSTATE AND FOREIGN COMMERCE COMMITTEE.HIS POINTED WITTICISMS,HIS SHARP SALLIES,AND HIS FIERY PRONOUNCEMENTS ON THE WICKEDNESS OF CRIME BROUGHT HIM NATIONAL PROMINENCE AS MILLIONS WATCHED HIS CRIME COMMITTEE'S SESSIONS ON TELEVISION,HEADED BY SENATOR ESTES KEFAUVER(D),TENNESSEE, FROM MAY 10TH ,1950 TO AUGUST 30TH,1952.
