Varicella zoster virus produced plaques in monolayers of
MRC-5
cells. Each well contained different amounts of the antiviral drug aciclovir. By counting the plaques (holes formed by the virus in the layer of cells) the potency of the aciclovir can be calculated (i.e. the IC50).
