Summary

Description
English: Victorian Railways 5'3" gauge A E Smith 'N' Class light lines freight 2-8-2 No.N432, built by VR Newport in 1951, withdrawn 1966, at the Victoria Railway Museum, North Williamstown, 2 April 2016. They were improved 'K' Class 2-8-0's with a longer boiler and wide firebox necessitating a trailing truck and were convertible to standard gauge. VR Newport built 30 in 1925-31 (1 had a trailing truck booster in 1927), which from 1936 received a modified front end and smoke deflectors. North British built 50 more in 1945-50 with a revised boiler incorporating the modified front end, combustion chamber and thermic syphons. They also had German Witte smoke deflectors. In 1951 10 of these were sold to the South Australian Railways as their '750' Class. 20 more of an updated version with Boxpok wheels were ordered from VR Newport but only 3 were completed in 1950-51 before the order was cancelled because of rapid dieselisation. 36 were converted to burn oil in 1951-56. They were withdrawn in 1958-66 on the VR and in 1961-67 on the SAR.
