Summary
Description Vilas Circle Bear Effigy Mound and the Curtis Mounds (7398695550).jpg | The Vilas Circle Bear Effigy Mound and the Curtis Mounds (c. 500-1000). Even in the 1890s, the importance of preserving Native American burial grounds was recognized in Madison. Developers for Wingra Park, one of the first suburbs of Madison, created an oval park to preserve these mounds, including a large bear effigy (pictured here). Originally there was also a series of seven linear mounds, but over time, all but two have eroded to the surface. |
