Notes The Kröller-Müller Museum renamed this important drawing Les Racines in accordance with van Gogh's own account of the work in Letter 222 . In that letter he remarked that in this drawing, and another drawing, a larger version (now lost) of Sorrow (F929a) he had finished at the same time, he was trying to express something of life's struggles. Both drawings are masterworks of draftsmanship.
