Object history | The painting was purchased by the Northern Irish Government for £209 and four shillings in 1933, however caused discord when it was realised it contained the Pope, leading to it being debated in the Northern Irish Parliament. It was hung in the Northern Irish parliament until being attacked by members of the Scottish Protestant League, later being moved into storage at the Public Record Office.
