exacerbation noun [ ɪɡzasəˈbeɪʃ(ə)n ]

• the process of making a problem, bad situation, or negative feeling worse.

Origin: late Middle English (in the sense ‘provocation to anger’): from Latin exacerbatio(n-), from the verb exacerbare (see exacerbate).
