Origin: late 16th century: from obsolete French resentir, from re- (expressing intensive force) + sentir ‘feel’ (from Latin sentire ). The early sense was ‘experience an emotion or sensation’, later ‘feel deeply’, giving rise to ‘feel aggrieved by’.
