• a force, velocity, or other vector quantity which is equivalent to the combined effect of two or more component vectors acting at the same point.

Origin: mid 17th century (in the adjectival sense): from Latin resultant- ‘springing back’, from the verb resultare (see result). The noun sense dates from the early 19th century.
