sherbet noun [ ˈʃəːbət ]

• a flavoured sweet effervescent powder eaten alone or made into a drink.

Origin: early 17th century: from Turkish şerbet, Persian šerbet, from Arabic šarba ‘drink’, from šariba ‘to drink’. Compare with syrup.
