urticate verb [ ˈəːtɪkeɪt ]

• cause a stinging or prickling sensation like that given by a nettle.

Origin: mid 19th century (earlier (mid 17th century) as urtication ): from medieval Latin urticat- ‘stung’, from the verb urticare, from Latin urtica (see urticaria).
