As children move into adolescence, they seek much more autonomy. At this stage, parents must achieve a delicate balance between granting autonomy and making sure their children do not get into situations where problematic or even dangerous behaviour could occur. It could be helpful if parents establish effective communication with their children with regard to what they are doing each day and foster their academic interests. This makes it likely that their children will be involved with other teens who are enthusiastic about school and not into risk- taking.
